Andrew S. Koch

Biography

Dr. Koch has dedicated his life to the education and training of undergraduates. He accomplishes this through constant refinement in his classes and one-on-one training of undergraduate researchers. As of the 2013/2014 academic year, Dr. Koch has mentored 60 undergraduate senior research projects, with well over half of these students pursuing advanced degrees. He has served as a reviewer for Journal of Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of Materials, Macromolecules, American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, and the Petroleum Research Fund, and is a member of the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, Council on Undergraduate Research, Project Kaleidoscope (Faculty for the 21st Century), and Mid-Atlantic Association of Liberal Arts Chemistry Teachers. Dr. Koch has co-authored 17 publications on synthesis, material science, and chemical education, and has presented at national and international conferences. The work in his labs introduces students to advanced synthetic techniques and modern spectroscopy. His goal is to teach undergraduates to be independent researchers, while exposing them to developing fields within chemistry and build an appreciation for the chemist’s role in solving problems. This work has received external funding, and many students have presented their finding at national and regional meetings.
