The St. Mary’s County Library is calling on local artists to help bring creativity and innovation to life through a new mural project inside the Lexington Park Library’s makerspace. Selected finalists will receive a $100 stipend to develop design concepts, and the artist ultimately chosen for the project will be awarded $1,500 to complete the mural, covering all materials, supplies and related costs.

A Space Designed For Innovation

The mural will span two walls measuring 40 inches in height, with one wall extending 21 feet and the other 41 feet. Library officials encourage designs that reflect the spirit of the makerspace, incorporating themes such as technology, innovation and engineering while remaining engaging for visitors of all ages.

Artists are asked to align their concepts with the makerspace’s existing color palette of dark blue, dark teal and lime green. Designs may repeat across the length of the walls, and while digital submissions are preferred, support will be available for incorporating physical artwork into the final installation.

Library staff also welcome artists to visit the space in person to better understand its layout and furnishings before submitting proposals.

Submission Timeline And Selection Process

Artists must submit portfolio samples along with a written statement outlining their design ideas between April 21 and May 11. Finalists will be notified by May 12 and asked to submit full design proposals by May 18. The completed mural is expected to be finished by June 1, 2026.

A selection committee made up of library and Arts Council staff will review submissions and choose the final design.

How To Apply

Submissions should be emailed to Amy Ford at aford@stmalib.org.

The project offers a unique opportunity for local artists to leave a lasting creative mark on a community space dedicated to learning, exploration and hands-on innovation.
