The Museum Studies program invites the entire community to Museum Studies Week 2026, themed “America Then and Now: Cultural Heritage, Community, and the Legacy of Independence in Southern Maryland.”

 

Tuesday, Feb. 24, 4:30-6 p.m. (DPC)

America Then and Now Panel Discussion

Four professionals from museums and other cultural heritage sites in Southern Maryland will discuss how their institution is planning programming and events for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. *Funding for snacks and refreshments provided by Museum Studies and the Boyden Gallery.

Peter Friesen, Director of Education, Historic St Mary’s City
Jerome Spears, Genetic Explorer/Family Researcher, Historic Sotterley Descendants 
Lucille Walker, Executive Director, Southern Maryland National Heritage Area

A Day in the Life of an Artifact Lab Tour with Dr J. H. Ogborne, Curator of Collections, HSMC

Wednesday, Feb. 25, 4:45-6 p.m. (AAW104 and HSMC labs and collection spaces)

Take a look behind the scenes in the archaeology laboratories and collections storage of Historic St. Mary’s City’s Research and Collections Department. Follow along the travels of artifacts as archaeologists clean, catalogue, prep for exhibit, and curate them in their daily work. Space is limited, register to reserve your spot

 

Museum Studies Internship Showcase and Information Session 

Thursday, Feb. 26, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (Awesome Room, River Center 2nd floor)

Museum Studies faculty and students will highlight the rich variety of internships that Museum Studies students have completed recently and are working in currently, as well as provide information and advising for future internship opportunities. All majors/minors are welcome to attend!
