Applications are now open for the 2026 Gull Summer Term at the Gull Island Institute

The Gull Island Institute is an educational organization that aims to reinvent the liberal arts for a changing planet. The Gull Summer Term (GST) is our month-long undergraduate liberal arts program, which this year will take place in an exciting new location at the Barn House on Martha’s Vineyard. The 2026 GST will run from May 17th to June 13th, 2026, and is entirely tuition-free for all students.

The GST is a place-based liberal arts program for current and recent undergraduate students interested in what it means to engage in democratic citizenship during a period of social and ecological upheaval. Through transdisciplinary daily seminars, labor projects, and self-governance, students explore critical questions about life on a changing planet: what is a right relation to the land and water? What makes a place habitable, and what does it mean to inhabit it well?

Join us to:

  • farm sustainably,
  • tend to remote coastal conservation lands,
  • read major works of western and Indigenous traditions,
  • ask questions that are critical to our current moment of climate crisis, and
  • work with a cross-disciplinary faculty to chart a new approach to liberal arts learning.

Applications are due Jan. 31, 2026. Students from all disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply!

Questions? We will be hosting two virtual info sessions about the program and application process on Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. ET. Or, get in touch with us via email at contact@gullisland.org.
