Exhibition of artist books on display in the Library, first floor December 15-19, 2025.
These original artist books were made by members of the fall 2025 "Woman Word: Women Writing Novels" upper-level English seminar, taught by Professor Jennifer Cognard-Black.
Each artist book represents the artist's idiosyncratic engagement with one of the novels they studied in this seminar, while also amalgamating word and image to consider how the idea of "authority" remains a vexed aspect of authorship for femme-presenting novelists of all kinds, including cis women, transfem women, and genderfluid and/or genderqueer writers. For as Audrey Niffenegger, a popular fiction writer and maker of artist books, has said, "To make books is to gain power over objects.... To make books is to create physical forms for ideas."
