Assignment objectives: To explore natural history study and documentation in a similar mode to Conrad (Konrad) Gessner in his 16th century encyclopedic works, History of AnimalsHistory of Plants, and the Universal Bibliography. His method encompassed collecting all references to a given plant or animal including descriptions and illustrations from previous publications, and by crossing over boundaries into literary references, folk tales, popular culture, etc.  Each student chooses an animal for their project and learns about natural history illustration by selecting and then copying artworks across time and culture, and by curating a set of textual excerpts related to their animal.  This course cross lists with ENST.
