The Seahawks Ethics Bowl team will compete Saturday in the Chesapeake Regional Ethics Bowl, hosted this year by UMBC.
The team consists of (back row) Argyrios Tasikas, Ruth Damte, Bechorah Aguoru, Lainey Shankle, Blaire Dickens; (front row) Coach Taber and Zane Obi.
The team has been meeting MW 3:10-4:25 all semester to research and discuss the 15 cases posted by the national Ethics Bowl Case Committee, on such issues as:
- whether, and how, cell phone use should be restricted in schools;
- whether national park visitors should ever assist animals in distress;
- whether non-disclosure agreements can be used to protect perpetrators from being exposed to the public;
- whether the U.S. and E.U. should impose tariffs on Chinese-made EVs;
- whether the funerary industry should make AI-generated audio of the deceased available to the family;
- how, if at all, the multi-year drought in the Southwest should affect a 1944 water treaty between the U.S. and Mexico.
We thank Amanda Taylor, the Interim Director Speaking and Writing Center, and tutors Lexi Bowles, Allison Glaser, and Sam Parizek for their feedback and advice in a practice run last week.
The Seahawks will be going up against some much larger schools, like Villanova and Temple. But the team is ready to proudly represent the St. Mary's community.
