The Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Space is now complete! In collaboration with the Office of Residence Life and the Office of Multicultural Programming, the Student Government Association passed a bill to supply our new Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Space with furniture, books, and materials supporting the diverse practices of our community.

The Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Space, located in Campus Center room 143 (beside the Unity and Rainbow Rooms) provides our community with a dedicated space for individual and small group prayer, meditation, reflection, or a quiet space to take a break during the day.

“St. Mary’s Female Seminary - The state’s 200th anniversary memorial established by act of the legislature of 1839 as a living monument to mark the birthplace of the state and of religious liberty.”

Religious Liberty has been important to St. Mary’s College of Maryland since its founding as St. Mary’s Female Seminary, a state-sponsored preparatory school for women. This Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Space is an extension of our founding purpose - a celebration of religious tolerance, freedom, and liberty in the United States. This Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Space is made possible by collaboration between the Student Government Association, the Department of Student Life, and the Office of Multicultural Programming.

Community expectations:

Please be mindful while using this space to care for the materials provided and return all materials to their appropriate boxes at the end of your time in the space. Religious texts on the top two shelves have been donated by local communities, you are welcome to borrow them for a time or keep them for your personal use. All other books have been provided by the SGA and other community partners; these books are intended for use only within the prayer and meditation space. Please do not remove these books or any other materials.

Please utilize the “Available - In Use” sliding sign on the door to indicate your use of the room while entering and exiting. Community members are expected to respect the privacy of others and not enter the space while the sliding sign reads “occupied.”

A white-noise machine is available behind the door for you to use.

Please email Meghan Pushee (mjpushee@smcm.edu) or Alise Maxie (anmaxie@smcm.edu) if you have any questions about this space, would like to donate materials, or have any requests for the space.
