St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) has partnered with the National Association of Resource Conservation & Development Councils (NARCDC) to create and provide 12 Summer Sails internship opportunities across the United States EXCLUSIVELY to SMCM students.
Participating states: Pennsylvania, North Carolina, West Virginia, California (remote), Alabama & Georgia
As one of the five key partners in the National Conservation Partnership (NCP), the National Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils is integral to the creation and implementation of resource conservation programs across the country that are critical for the sustainability of our natural resources.
Hours per week: 32
Internship duration: May 28th-August 6th (10 weeks)

Overview of organization:
Interns are a part of a cohort throughout the summer, divided into teams to travel their internship specific state learning about Resource, Conservation, and Development (RC&D) Councils and their programs.
RC&D Councils are local 501c3 organizations that are made up of leaders and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, including local government, education, and civic organizations.
Together, they collaborate to identify needs, develop strategies, and implement initiatives to improve the places we call home.
As an RC&D intern, you'll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community development, project management, and stakeholder engagement. You'll work closely with experienced professionals and community leaders, making meaningful contributions to projects that matter.
Location #1: Alabama (Housing IS provided, transportation required)

Focus Areas for California Internship: Social Media Management and Community Outreach for an Organization involved in Forestry, Fire Mitigation, Pollinators, Youth Engagement
Location #3: Pennsylvania (Housing NOT provided, transportation required)
Focus areas for Pennsylvania internship: Community Development, Garden Events (Garden to Table), Community Outreach, Youth Summer Program
Location #4: West Virginia (Housing NOT provided, transportation required)
Focus areas for West Virginia internship: Grant Writing, Research, Community Gardens, Youth Engagement, Urban Agriculture
Location #5: Alabama Urban Agriculture (Housing NOT provided, transportation required)
Focus areas for Alabama Urban Agriculture internship: Urban Agriculture: Event Planning, Community Gardens, Website and Social Media Management, Youth Engagement, Community Development
Location #6: North Carolina (Housing NOT provided, transportation required)

Focus areas for Georgia internship: Land Conservation, Water Management, Land Management, and Community Development
Interns will:
- Receive orientation and training about NARCDC and RC&D Councils
- Learn about managing a non-profit organization
- Networking skills with other local business and conservation organizations
- Be on time. Dress right for the office/event. Keep an open mind and be ready to pitch in.
- Be professional and courteous to peers and staff. Call the daily supervisor immediately if they are ill or have an unexpected conflict which prevents them from arriving on time or at all. Be considerate.
- Don't be shy to ask questions! Be up for meeting new folks and trying new things.
Description of training and mentoring:
- Shadow RC&D Council members and learn about different aspects of the organization and programs.
- Interaction/training/job shadowing with RC&D partner organizations
Required qualifications:
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn! Organizational skills, clear writing skills, and a basic proficiency in spoken and written English language are needed.
- Customer service skills
- Reliable Transportation
Preferred qualifications:
- Enjoy people! Desire to be part of an awesome team!
- Interest in Ag, Conservation, and/or Community Development
- Ability to work outside in varying weather climates
- Beginner graphic design, social media, and marketing skills
