Influenza type "A" at SMCM is on the rise. The campus community is encouraged to take everyday precautions to protect others while sick, including:

  • While sick, stay away from others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and wash your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects contaminated with germs like flu.
  •  Stay home until you are better!

If you are sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm for more information on caring for yourself during flu season. Health Services at the Wellness Center has medical appointments for students needing further evaluation. In certain cases, antivirals may be prescribed. Call 240 895-4289 if you need an appointment.
