Good Afternoon SMCMers,

Winter weather is upon us and the slippery conditions that are part of the winter package may soon follow. Please take a minute to review the following safety tips when walking around campus realizing that ice and snow can be tracked INSIDE buildings creating slippery surfaces where you would least expect them.

Winter Walking Safety Tips

Winter, and the snow and ice it brings to cover the roads, sidewalks and parking lots can be quite dangerous.

Take steps now to prevent a fall by learning and implementing these suggestions:

Be Safe

  • Plan extra time on your schedule to prevent being in a rush. Most accidents occur due to inattention or being in a hurry.
  • Remove snow from shoes before entering any building.
  • Always use a handrail when climbing up and down stairs.
  • Always use handrail when going in and out of buildings, vehicles or public transportation.
  • Wear footwear with traction
  • WALK LIKE A PENGUIN ON SLIPPERY SURFACES...see the attached image for more information

Be Smart

  • Walk at a slower pace
  • Stay on designated walkways.
  • Watch for and avoid slippery surfaces even after entering a building as snow and ice can be tracked indoors

Be Seen

  • Wear visible clothing especially at night or during heavy snow
    • For those that enjoy an early morning/evening jog or bike ride please take the necessary steps to ensure motorists can see you!
  • Wait for vehicles to stop completely before crossing the road.
  • Approaching vehicles may not be able to stop immediately due to road conditions.

If you fall, relax and try to fall as limply as possible. Avoid using your arms to stop your fall. Easier said than done, but it does help.

If you need immediate medical attention, call 911.

To report unsafe or dangerous areas, please call the Office of Public Safety (x 4911)

Here's to a safe winter walking experience and enjoy the holidays!
