Dr. Gloria Ladson Billings
(1947 – Present)

Dr. Ladson- Billings is an education theorist and researcher. Her work examines the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African American students. She introduced the term “culturally relevant pedagogy” to describe a form of teaching that calls for engaging learners whose experiences and cultures are traditionally excluded from mainstream settings. Culturally relevant pedagogy, a theoretical model that focuses on multiple aspects of student achievement and supports students to uphold their cultural identities. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy also calls for students to develop critical perspectives that challenge societal inequality. Dr. Ladson-Billings is best known for her book, The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children, significant work in education.
