At November's (online) Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl, the St. Mary's team qualified for one of the berths to the Nationals, which is being held this weekend, online.

We're one of the 36 qualifying teams, out of about 190 teams that competed in the various Regionals. We'll be going up against some small schools (like Lynchburg College) and many larger ones, like UMBC, Macalester, Carleton, University of Colorado--Boulder, Oklahoma State, Harvard, Boston College, Stanford, Yale, West Point, and the Naval Academy, among others.

Consisting of Robert Artiga-Valencia, Asia Dofat, Mollie Rudow, Darah Schillinger, Nathan Villiger, and Hannah Yale, the team has been putting in lots of extra hours this week to finish off the preparing that we started in late December. (With some help from the Writing and Speaking Center, as well as some alumni from the SMCM Ethics Bowl team, who have Zoomed in to serve as judges asking tough questions.)

The 17 cases this year (given here) include issues like what tech companies should do in the face of spreading conspiracy theories, changes in Title IX policies, the (over)use of comfort animals, sex in the times of (supposed) social distancing, and whether public school teachers should be forced to return to in-person instruction.

We aim to do the Seahawks proud!
