Langston Hughes
(February 1, 1902- May 22, 1967)
Hughes was a novelist and poet. He wrote many short stories, plays, and poetry. He was a central figure during the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of black intellectual, literacy, and artistic life that took place during the 1920s. Hughes sought to tell honest portrayals of Black Americans by avoiding negative stereotypes. He told stories of Black Americans reflecting culture, love of music, laughter, and language along with their suffering.
