Inclusive Diversity, Equity, Access, and Accountability / IDE(A)2 and the Hilda C. Landers Library, Archives & Media Center (LAMC) launches the first in a monthly film series to celebrate our diversity on campus.

Our Mockingbird will kick-off the series with a virtual screening and panel discussion on January 21, 2021, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm.

5:00 pm:  Group viewing***
6:15 pm:  Panel discussion with:
  - Dr. Janna Chevon Thompson, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies
  - Dr. Jeffrey Coleman, Professor of English
  - Mr. William “BJ” Hall, St. Mary’s County NAACP Branch President

Our Mockingbird was selected to celebrate MLK Day and recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s unyielding fight for civil and human rights. Our Mockingbird is a feature-length documentary that uses Harper Lee's 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird as a lens to view race, class, gender, and justice, then and now. Woven through the film is the story of two extraordinarily different high schools in Birmingham, Alabama who collaborate on a remarkable production of the adapted play, To Kill a Mockingbird

*** While the January 21 event will begin with a group viewing, it is highly recommended that participants view the film individually beforehand and then join the panel discussion at 6:15 pm. The film will be available for on-demand viewing the week of January 17- 23, 2021, and available HERE.  A valid SMCM ID (One Card) is required to access the film if viewing from an off-campus location.

For those individuals who are unable to use the on-demand viewing option prior to the panel discussion, the film will be aired live on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at 5:00 pm via Zoom Webinar, but please note that the group viewing experience may be affected by poor audio and video quality, including lag time, when viewed via Zoom.

Register to participate in the virtual screening and/or panel discussion here.

Visit the IDE(A)2 website for full details on the film series.
