Fall ’17 Art SMP in progress exhibition
Opening Reception: Monday, Dec 4 2017 4:45pm - 5:45pm
We use punctuation marks to give meaning and context in language. Otherwise, the words we write become hard to understand or in some cases degraded to a senseless flow of ramblings. Commas allow us to pause, question marks to raise our doubts, exclamation marks to shout and celebrate, ellipsis to ponder and a period - to halt.
Likewise, the 9 artists included in this exhibition have thoughtfully created works that attempt to displace us from the regular rhythm of our everyday lives and their consequential apathy. In their art practice, the artists raised questions, looked closer, pondered deeper and uncovered underlying meanings. They deconstructed the familiar to bring us fresh perspectives while helping to make sense of the world around us.
Mayris Rios invites you to step into her virtual reality installation to experience a living memory of a loved one. Aine V. Cambridge White through polaroid photography investigates the misconceptions on twins, Alan Frampton bridges sculpture and printmaking as one holistic art form, Nina Harris with costume design exposes cultural truths of her homeland- Sicily. Madeleine Boies’s expressionist animation scrutinizes our complex emotions that we often do not have words for. Natalie Krissoff’s comic drawings let us see depression through the eyes of an astronaut. Tim McKay presents paintings with a playful and honest approach which oscillates between the real and abstract. Mia Thuro’s imaginative illustrations brings keystone species and their importance to life. Katia Meisinger’s otherworldly installation makes us believe in magic once again.
