Dear St. Mary's College Community,

One of the things we value most about St. Mary's College of Maryland is the care we show for one another. Our community is built on respect, dignity and a shared commitment to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to learn, work and thrive in a safe and supportive environment.

We also recognize that concerns about immigration enforcement remain very real for some members of our community and their families. These concerns deserve our attention, compassion and a clear understanding of the protections and procedures we have in place.

One year ago this month, our Board of Trustees approved the College's Immigration Enforcement Policy, establishing procedures for responding to immigration enforcement activity on campus. As we mark the first anniversary of its adoption, I want to reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff and remind everyone of the policy and resources available to our community.

Developed in accordance with guidance from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General and the Maryland Values Act, the Immigration Enforcement Policy guides how the College responds if immigration enforcement officials arrive on campus.

We have also made resources available to help students, faculty and staff understand the appropriate steps to take:

I encourage everyone to review the policy and familiarize themselves with these resources. Understanding the procedures and knowing whom to contact are important ways we can help ensure that any situation is handled appropriately and in accordance with the law. Although we cannot control changes in federal immigration policy, we remain committed to taking the steps within our legal authority to support the safety and well-being of our campus community.

The St. Mary's Way reminds us of our responsibility to treat one another with compassion, respect the dignity of every individual and care for one another. These commitments are especially important when some among us may be experiencing uncertainty or concern.

Thank you for the care, compassion and respect you continue to show one another and for helping make St. Mary's College a place where everyone feels valued and supported.
