On Saturday, Dec. 22, The St. Mary’s College men’s basketball team (5-6) heads to Emmitsburg, Maryland, to face Mount St. Mary’s University (2-9) for an exhibition game that pits coach Chris Harney ’97  against his former player, Dan Engelstad ’07.

Engelstad was named head coach for The Mount in May 2018. He spent the last five seasons at the helm of Southern Vermont College (SVC) in Bennington, Vermont.

While attending St. Mary’s College, Engelstad served as a team captain (2004-07) for the Seahawks and graduated as the school's all-time leader with 419 career assists (Alex Franz ‘11 currently holds that record with 587 career assists).

Engelstad said early this year that St. Mary’s College impacted his life in a big way.  “It was during my time there that I knew that I wanted to pursue my dream of coaching. I had some terrific coaches that I still lean on. Coach Harney built a positive culture and I knew that I wanted to build a strong culture and cultivate lifelong relationships with my players too.”

Harney said he was happy to see Engelstad as the head coach at The Mount. “He has worked really hard to get where he is and the whole Seahawk basketball family is proud of what he has been able to accomplish. We tell our recruits all the time that St. Mary's College produces leaders not just employees and Dan is another fine example of that."

Tip-off for Saturday’s game is 4 p.m. at the Knott Arena in Emmitsburg.
