Libby Nutt Williams, professor of psychology and director of the Master of Arts in Counseling & Clinical Psychology program at SMCM, published an article with colleagues at Adelphi University in the the Counselling Psychology Quarterly. The article, entitled Clients' Perceptions of the Psychotherapy Relationship, details a Consensual Qualitative Research study (CQR: Hill, Thompson & Williams, 1997) that explored clients' perceptions of the therapeutic relationship. Despite the controversial nature of therapist self-disclosure, clients noted their interest in and curiosity about their therapists as people and even suggested that they benefitted from knowing a bit about their therapists’ lives. The study follows a 2017 call from Fuertes and Williams for more research on experiences, motivations, and perspectives of clients, as most empirical research in the field has emphasized the perspectives of therapists.
