The students Aurora Lewis, Stella L'Italien and Elizabeth Brown presented their SMP work at the Mid-Atlantic Ecological Society of America Conference. Lewis, Brown and L'Italien were supported by the Biology Department Travel Funds to attend the conference. Lewis presented her work on the incidence of the fungal pathogen Harringtonia lauricola in wild relatives of avocado across the US, which was funded by the Maryland Native Plant Society and Flores Biology Award.  L' Italien presented her work on the effects of invasive plant species in the community diversity of native bees in Southern Maryland. Her project started through SURF and continued as her SMP. Brown presented her literature review on the biochemical compounds from medicinal plants commonly used by the Piscataway people in Southern Maryland. Her work is bridging traditional knowledge in medicinal plants with current scientific advances that can explain the uses of these plants by the Piscatoway people. The three students have been working under the supervision of Lorena Torres-Martínez, assistant professor of biology.
