St. Mary's College of Maryland is hosting a SoMD 2030-funded high school STEM camp. Students will be introduced to a college-level laboratory experience with hands-on activities, safety training, and in-person instruction from SMCM’s faculty members:. Students will primarily focus on investigating the fundamentals of rocket design and propulsion by constructing multiple models with different propulsion mechanisms. Participating students will work closely with SMCM students and faculty mentors to test and refine their rocket designs to create a rocket model that achieves optimal aerodynamic performance. In addition to gaining hands-on experience in designing and launching rockets, students will develop skills in project management, communication, teamwork, and team building. There will be talks from guest speakers and industry experts who will introduce students to cutting-edge space science and technology. Students will use Physics Department telescopes to observe the Sun, planets in the Solar System, and other distant celestial objects.
