St. Mary’s College of Maryland political science major Henry Marks ’26 is set to represent young voters as an at-large delegate for Washington, D.C. at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) beginning Monday, Aug. 19.
The week before classes start for the College’s fall semester, Marks,19, will be in Chicago representing his district. He said when the D.C. Democratic Party was holding elections for convention delegates, he nominated himself in the first round but came up just shy of winning. He was encouraged to try again in the second round which resulted in his At-Large position.
“I am honored and excited to cast my vote for Kamala Harris for president at the convention in August,” said Marks. Voting, he said, is just one portion of the convention where he can represent young voters.
“Together with the rest of the D.C. delegation, I’ll also be working to make sure D.C. statehood is a priority for the party and that delegates renew their commitment to including it in the 2024 Democratic Platform.”
He said he is most looking forward to meeting the other delegates, especially young voters. “We may be few in number at the convention, but I think we can get a lot done by working together.”
Marks grew up on Capitol Hill surrounded by politics and his mother often helped support local campaigns. He has had an interest in politics since grade school. At a local level, he has testified at the D.C. Council on gun violence, interned at the Office of the Attorney General, and served as a student adviser to the District of Columbia Public Schools Chancellor.
