Natural Science and Mathematics Colloquium

Caught between two bays: intercontinental collaboration towards student empowerment and a more sustainable future

Eva Ingvadottir, MSc

University of Akureyri

UNAK, Iceland

Wednesday, April 24, 2024

Schaefer Hall 106 – 4:45 p.m.

University of Akureyri (UNAK, Iceland) and St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) both lie in close proximity to large bodies of water –Eyjafjörður and the Chesapeake Bay. Established in 1987, UNAK is the only university in Iceland that offers undergraduate majors in fisheries science and biotechnology, both of which have strong ties to the marine environment. Originally founded in 1840, SMCM offers the only undergraduate degree in Marine Science in Maryland and one of the few in the United States. In this talk, SMCM’s Dr. Christina Goethel and UNAK’s Eva Ingvadottir, accompanied by their research students Maren Bleiss and Isold Gudjonsdottir, will describe how their collaboration came about, where it has brought them, and how the involvement of students has enriched it. Listeners can expect the following: a sprinkle of microbiology, a dash of ecology, a few minks and ocean quahogs, and a whole lot of scientific enquiry.

This event is free and open to the public. It is meant for a general audience. If you are an instructor, please announceit to your students.
