St. Mary’s College of Maryland recognized 27 senior student-athletes in a special “grad walk" on Thursday, May 8. The event was held for the baseball and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, which, due to the spot they’ve earned in the United East Conference and the NCAA Division III Championship tournaments, will keep them from the regularly scheduled 2025 Commencement exercises this Saturday, May 10.

Baseball athletes will be competing Saturday in the United East Conference Final Four, while men’s and women’s lacrosse athletes will be competing that day in the second and first rounds, respectively, of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

The College held the grad walk under the same tent where their peers will gather on Saturday. The Seahawks were joined for the ceremony by their family, friends and teammates, as well as faculty and staff.

The short yet traditional commencement experience began with the familiar “Pomp and Circumstance March” as administrators in full regalia made their way to the stage and graduates processed to their seats. The student-athletes in attendance listened to brief remarks from President Tuajuanda C. Jordan.

“You are the embodiment of the St. Mary’s Way,” she told the graduating Seahawks. “Thank you for your exceptional work. Your achievements that you bring to this day, your competitive efforts on Saturday and your good deeds in the years ahead add to the legacy of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Congratulations on a job well done.”

Graduates then heard each of their names and majors read aloud as they walked the stage and posed for a photo with President Jordan.

On Saturday,  while their peers gather on the Townhouse Green, the women’s lacrosse team will begin their NCAA journey, taking on Haverford College in first-round action at noon on the campus of Salisbury University. Men’s lacrosse players will prepare for second-round action facing No. 2 Salisbury University at 3:30 p.m. on the Seagulls’ campus. The SMCM baseball team will prepare that day to face Penn State Harrisburg at 3 p.m. on the campus of Keystone College in La Plume, Pennsylvania, for Final Four action.

The 2025  Commencement occurs Saturday at 10 a.m. on the College’s Townhouse Green. Saturday’s Commencement will be live-streamed, as was Thursday’s Grad Walk. Both links can be found on the College’s Commencement site.
