St. Mary’s College alumni Lauren Hall ‘19, Livia Shuller ‘19, and Melanie Kimball ‘19, along with their St. Mary’s Project (SMP) mentor, Jessica L. Malisch, assistant professor of physiology, were featured in an article in the September-October Newsletter of the Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS). The article by Kathy Brown, The Art of Mentoring, discusses the lack of gender parity in the sciences and the importance of strong female mentors for female students in STEM fields. Brown met Hall, Shuller, and Kimball when they presented their SMP research at the annual MOS conference in June 2019 and states in the article: “The three young women I spoke with were all from St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) and all had the same biology professor and research advisor – Dr. Jessica Malisch. As they shared their future plans, I thought St. Mary’s and their professor must be doing something right.”
