Professors Samantha Elliot (biology) and Emek Kose (math), along with alumna Anna Steinfeld ’17 and two other collaborators, published “Modeling the Stem Cell Hypothesis: Investigating the Effects of Cancer Stem Cells and TGF−β on Tumor Growth” in AIMS Press.

The article proposes a mathematical model to describe the interaction of cancer stem cells, tumor cells, and the immune system in order to better understand tumor growth in the presence of cancer stem cells.

The authors, including Allison Lewis of Lafayette College and Elizabeth Zollinger of St. Joseph’s College, consider the system in two scenarios: with no-treatment and with a chemotherapy treatment regimen. They developed a system of differential equations, fit the parameters to experimental data, and performed sensitivity and stability analysis.
