Title of Presentation: Unearthing the Nation: How Archaeological Discoveries (Re)write the Nation's History

Presenter: Joshua M. Torres

Presenter Job Title: Program Manager, History and Culture Services and Regional Archeologist, National Park Service National Capital Region

Abstract: Historic preservation--the citizens' strongest tool for protecting the nation's historic and cultural resources--faces an existential threat as Washington moves to eliminate the rules and regulations requiring federal agencies to seek citizen input. Dr. Joshua M. Torres, an archaeologist with the National Park Service, will examine three recent archaeological studies within the National Park Service National Capital Region revealing how the National Historic Preservation Act actively shapes and contributes to the production of our national history rather than merely protecting old sites. Ultimately, it underscores the importance of this foundational legislation and is essential to preserving the tangible cultural heritage that defines America's collective identity.
