Dear St. Mary's College Community,
I invite you to join us on Tuesday, Nov. 10, for two thought-provoking presentations featuring Norwegian philosopher and former Norwegian Nobel Committee Vice Chair Henrik Syse and his daughter, Jenny Helene Syse. Their visit offers opportunities to explore two subjects that continue to shape our world: humanity's pursuit of discovery through space exploration and our ongoing responsibility to build and sustain peace.
2–3 p.m. | “We Go to the Moon: A Reflection on One of Humankind's Most Exciting Adventures” | Hosted by Kelly Neiles
Henrik and Jenny Helene Syse will explore the Apollo program, the moon landings and NASA's Artemis program, considering how space exploration connects to international collaboration, history, geography, philosophy and the sciences.
7 p.m. | Andrew J. Goodpaster Endowed Leadership and Honor Lecture “Peace in Our Time? Reflections on Peaceful Coexistence and the Role of the Nobel Peace Prize at a Time of Dramatic Change and Increased Conflict”
Henrik Syse will draw on his scholarship in peace and conflict studies and his experience as vice chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee to examine the challenges of peaceful coexistence, the role of the Nobel Peace Prize and the possibilities for peace in a changing world.
The evening lecture also marks the launch of our new President's Colloquium Series, part of the St. Mary's Athenaeum. Through this series, we will welcome distinguished scholars and public leaders to campus for conversations about important issues through the lens of the liberal arts and the public good.
Both presentations will take place in the Recital Hall of the Nancy R. and Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center.
Admission is free.
I encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to engage with important ideas and perspectives, and I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Rhonda Phillips, Ph.D., FAICP
