Associate Professor of Political Science Antonio Ugues and his colleague, Xavier Medina Vidal, published "Democratic Confidence From Abroad: Evidence From the Mexican Diaspora in the United States" in Politics and Governance. The study examines the relationship between Mexican diasporic citizens’ perceptions of electoral integrity and their participation in elections from abroad, as well as their levels of political efficacy, contributing to scholarship on transnational political behavior among diaspora communities. Utilizing data from two pre-election surveys of Mexican citizens residing in the United States, Ugues and Medina Vidal find that respondents with high levels of confidence in the electoral process are more likely to vote from abroad and believe that their extraterritorial vote matters to national elections. This research provides new insight into the political attitudes and orientations of diasporic citizens’ views toward democratic institutions and to the understanding of transnational democratic participation.
