Class of 2006 Bachelor in Biology
Genetic Counselor Reviewer at Carelon
[SMCM] is such a unique place. It's one of those places that not a lot of people have heard of it, but when they have, it really hits everybody in the heart.
I knew I wanted to go into genetic counseling since I was in ninth grade. I shared that with a professor who connected me with a former student who had come here
and then had gone on to graduate school for genetic counseling and the alumni hooked me up! I was able to shadow them and it was just fantastic!
Colleen Tsikerdanos graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2006 with a degree in Biology. She knew that she wanted to be a genetic counselor from a young age, and came to St. Mary’s College for the amazing Biology and psychology programs. While at SMCM, she got the amazing opportunity to shadow a former graduate who was in grad school for genetic counseling. Colleen is now a licensed and certified genetic counselor. Some of her favorite things about St. Mary’s College are the environment, the community, and the lifelong friends. Her and her husband, who is a fellow alum, have a close knit group of friends that they met on campus. They've stayed friends for over 20 years.
