Alumna Kristin Effland ’02 has co-authored the article, “A web-based resource for promoting equity in midwifery education and training: Towards meaningful diversity and inclusion,” in Midwifery, a U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health online publication.

Each page of the website begins with relevant quotations usually by midwives or aspiring midwives of color. These statements help explain the relevance and importance of each topic as part of a systems approach to transforming midwifery education and training.

“Midwives and aspiring midwives of color have been advocating for equity in midwifery education long before the creation of this web-based resource,” said Effland. “With that in mind, this website aims to amplify the voices and perspectives of these important and all too often ignored members of our community and serve as a living repository for the transformative ideas and tools necessary to bring about equity in midwifery education and training.”

Review:

"This article by Effland and Hays is a powerful contribution to advancing access, equity, and social justice in midwifery education. The authors make a compelling argument as to why equity in education is central to ensuring patient-centered, concordant care. The conceptual model proposed in this paper alongside the accompanying website outline clear strategic directions and practical tools for institutions, preceptors, and academic faculty alike. Such resources are invaluable for educator professional development and systems-level change in midwifery education." - Courtney L. Everson, PhD
