Biography

Elsa G. Ugues is the Educational Studies Support Specialist in the Department of Educational Studies at St. Mary's College of Maryland. She recently received her M.Ed. in Reading Education, a specialization in literacy instruction and assessment from Towson University. She also holds a B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations from California State University, Bakersfield. She has a wealth of experience working in public education, youth services, and community program coordination in public libraries. Most recently, she worked as a K-5 special education paraeducator in the St. Mary's County Public Schools system where she provided personalized instructional support to local students with diverse learning needs. She is passionate about the literacy development of young learners. As the child of Mexican immigrants and a first-generation college graduate, she is cognizant of the challenges first-generation students face. She strives to support the preparation of teachers who can meet the needs of a wide range of students, especially first-generation students and neurodiverse student populations.
