Deborah Lawrence

Associate Professor of Music

Deborah Lawrence

Deborah Lawrence studies the music of Renaissance Spain, has published articles and book chapters on various aspects of that music, and is currently working on a book regarding music education in early modern Spain. This book was inspired by, in part, a seminar she attended at the Newberry Library in Chicago, sponsored by the NEH, concerning the use of music books in Early Modern life. Her 2012 sabbatical allowed her to return to Madrid to consult a number of works at the National Library of Spain. Other areas of interest, for both research and teaching, include (among other things) opera and jazz. Formerly a student of piano, Lawrence still plays and has a preference for Bach and Mozart. She lives in Maryland with her husband and cat.
