Join pianists and faculty members Eliza Garth, Brian Ganz and Beverly Babcock for four days of piano heaven at St. Mary's College of Maryland with the Piano Festival by the River: A Retreat for Pianists and Piano Lovers, Aug. 31 - Sept. 3, 2018.

Piano Festival by the River is a yearly summer retreat for pianists, a place to focus completely on the piano in community with other pianists and piano lovers.

The festival experience includes many different elements and opportunities. Master classes and recitals are open to the public and free of charge. All master classes and recitals take place in Auerbach Auditorium of St. Mary’s Hall. For a schedule, visit http://www.smcm.edu/events/piano-festival-by-the-river/

Piano participants have two options: full participation of the four-day festival or day participation by attending on Sept. 1, 2, or 3.

Limited to five participants, the full participant option is intended for advanced pianists of all ages (serious amateurs welcome); admission by audition tape (recorded live performance), teacher recommendation, and curriculum vitae or other description of piano experience (support materials are optional for returning participants). Pianists come for the complete four-day festival, perform in the opening event, in two master classes, and in the “Piano Festival Participants’ Recital,” as well as observe all master classes, receive one private lesson, and attend professional recitals. The cost is $525.

The day participant option is intended for pianists of all ages who are at the early-intermediate level and above; applicants should include curriculum vitae or other description of piano experience (years and location of study, etc.) and a letter of recommendation from a current teacher or other qualified professional (support materials are optional for returning participants). Pianists perform in one master class, observe another master class, attend a professional recital, and have the option to perform in “Piano Festival Participants’ Recital.” Limited to 15 participants, the cost is $225 with the option to add a private lesson for an additional $75.
