With the support of the Alice McLellan Birney Women Studies Fund, the cross-disciplinary study area in Women, Gender, & Sexuality presents a colloquium each spring in connection with Women’s History Month. Since 2000, the WGSX Colloquium has become an established tradition at St. Mary’s College. This very successful annual program has regularly drawn large audiences to events that have offered powerful interdisciplinary combinations of scholarly discourse and artistic expression (including film screenings, theatrical performances, and exhibitions) to discuss a topic critical to the lives of women. THIS YEAR’S THEME – THE GENDERED IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC The societal impact of the pandemic has been an uneven one and this year’s WGSX Colloquium focuses on the effects of COVID-19 upon those already marginalized by a fractured and indifferent healthcare system. Colloquium sessions include distinguished guest speakers, discussions, and workshops centering transgender and immigrant communities and the unique challenges they face, both locally and nationwide, as well as how the art world has been disrupted in unpredictable ways. We invite you to join our speakers who will share their expertise and passion as we focus on what is needed to build a more equitable response to the pandemic, and contemplate the role art, activism, and scholarship can play in bringing about healing and progress towards a more inclusive and just future.
