The Equestrian Club is one of St. Mary’s club sports. Students attend weekly horseback riding lessons to improve their form, flatwork, and jumping abilities. Lessons are available for all riding levels, from new beginners to seasoned riders. The barn provides a ton of different riding opportunities for students including entering local shows, leasing horses, and providing additional ride time for interested students. Team is a subset of the club that competes in IHSA competitions. There are usually 6 shows in the fall and 2-3 in the spring. All team members must attend weekly team lessons that focus on equitation skills on Fridays that are run by our fabulous coaches, Leslie and Sarah. We also get discounted pricing thanks to the support from the Student Government Association. We are affiliated with A Moment In Time farm (www.amitfarm.net) which is about 30 minutes from campus. We fit lessons into your academic schedule, so how much you ride is really dependent on how large of a time commitment you are looking for. Most students ride between 1-3 times a week. All lessons have a carpool to assist students who do not have cars on campus. Lessons run for 10 weeks per semester.
Aside from riding, we also have tons of events each semester for club bonding and fundraising. We offer a photoshoot fundraiser every semester for club members and barn members to get photographs taken with their favorite horse. Every Spring, we offer one-time lessons for campus community members to receive an introductory riding lesson taught by our very own club riders. For One St. Mary’s Carnival, we bring a pony (“L’il Sebastian”) on campus for students to feed treats to and get selfies with. We also assist the barn with tons of shows and events that they host each month. For club service, we offer “Barn Clean-Up” days where we assist the barn with any extra work they need done. At the end of each academic year, the club hosts a banquet for members to dress up, get free food, and receive a personalized paper plate award!
