About the ΦBK Writing Internship Program

Our writing internship program is for new Phi Beta Kappa members who are looking for an opportunity to gain professional experience and support Phi Beta Kappa’s mission to advance excellence in the liberal arts and sciences in higher education. The program is open to recent graduates, but preference is given to students inducted in their junior year.

Interns must make a five-month commitment to the program and prepare a minimum of five publishable articles (500-700 words each) for The Key Reporter website, www.keyreporter.org. Each intern receives a $1,000 stipend.

Applicants who have previously served or are currently serving as interns are not eligible.

Interns write and conduct research remotely. Travel to the national office in Washington, DC, is not required. In addition to being good writers, interns need to be able to work independently and meet deadlines with a minimum of oversight and supervision.

Writing interns must accept assigned topics and/or pitch their stories to the editor of The Key Reporter for approval before a completed article is submitted. Phi Beta Kappa does not guarantee that every article an intern produces will be published. Articles may be lightly edited at the national office, but if a piece requires substantial editing or revision, it will be rejected or returned to the author to be revised.

Interns receive full credit for their work. Each article published by the Society will include the author’s name, major, institutional affiliation, and photograph. Those who complete the program may request a recommendation.
