CORE201 Externship Course Open to All Students for Registration (Can satisfy ELAW!)

CORE201: Fundamentals of Leadership & Professional Group Dynamics is open for all students looking to gain an externship experience (part class, part on-site internship) related to their interested career fields. 

Benefits of this course include:

  • An opportunity to earn 2 credit hours with only 50 minutes a week in the classroom 

  • Spending the remaining 6 hours a week gaining real work and project management experience in a professional work setting

  • Possibility of satisfying ELAW (at least 4 credit hours are required for this -- talk to our office for more information)

  • Making you HIGHLY competitive for internships! 

Below are the sections offered for CORE201 next semester:

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Mentoring in Education, Online with Devin Torres : Students will have the opportunity to  serve as mentors for high school students!

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Leadership in Higher Education, Online with Dr. Janna Thompson : Students in this course will be placed in offices on campus in student affairs, academic affairs or enrollment management departments assisting in the daily operations of that particular department. Students will also have to collaborate, plan, and implement recruitment/retention events on campus as well in the local community. 

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Personalized Therapy, Tuesdays 6pm-7pm with Jason Delucco : Students in this course will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience with Personalized Therapy focusing on Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and ABA Therapy services to adults and children.

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Professional Writing, Mondays 1:30pm-2:20pm with Crystal Brandt : Students in this section will have externships in various facets of the writing industry. 

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Green Works, Wednesdays 1:30pm-2:20pm with Crystal Brandt : Students in this section will have externships within industries related to the natural environment and sustainability.

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Effective Teaching and Learning, Fridays 12pm-1pm with Samantha Elliot : Students participating in this class should be concurrently enrolled or working as an SMCM Teaching Assistant in any department, or working within an office with a specific outreach/teaching component. 

CORE201: Fundamentals of Professional Dynamics: Library Sciences, Mondays 10:40am-11:30am with Amanda Vermeulen : Students will be placed at libraries where they will  engage in a library setting, putting the skills of project management, group dynamics, and ethics into use along with learning the specific skills of library science and librarianship.
