I am an undergraduate student researcher at SMCM. The following study (IRB FA19_08) has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at St. Mary’s College of Maryland for the protection of human subjects.

I am conducting research on cultural experiences of young Latinx immigrants (first, second, or third-generation). Research focuses on how cultural loss or preservation of the own culture impacts both young Latinx immigrants, who may or may not culturally assimilate into the US, and their host society in Southern Maryland. I want to investigate how different forms of acculturation and/or cultural preservation impact young Hispanic communities in the US, particularly in Southern Maryland. This study aims to build and strengthen an approach to Latinx immigration that fosters transcultural interaction in the host societies.

I am seeking the participation of students who meet the following criteria:

  • are at least 18 years old,

  • are enrolled in college,

  • have at least one parent who is Latinx or a Latinx immigrant

Participation in this study will include an in-person interview of roughly 60 – 75 minutes and will be conducted in a private setting. There is no direct benefit to you from participating in this research, but your participation will help complete a study to better contribute to the discourse and practices that empower Latinx voices and cultures. The goal of this study is to foster a society where transcultural interactions are valued.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the Google Form HERE or contact Jamie Ourand at jmourand@smcm.edu or by phone at 443-975-6615. You will be reached either by email or phone (whatever works best for you). If you have any further questions and/or concerns, you may contact the faculty advisor for this study, Professor Ximena Postigo Guzman, at mxpostigoguzman@smcm.edu

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who you believe may be eligible and interested in participating!
