The 7th Annual STEM-ING Event on April 27th, 2019 was held on St. Mary’s College of Maryland. During this event, middle school girls participated in several STEM workshops while learning about women with successful STEM careers. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Inspiring the Next Generation, or STEM-ING for short, program has been coming to campus for the past few years to increase interest in STEM fields for middle school girls by providing role models and fun STEM workshops. This year, one of these woman role models was Dr. Michelle Milne, Assistant Professor of Physics at the college. The middle schoolers also got excited about the chemistry of life through a workshop called “A Plant’s Life in Action”, which was designed by St. Mary’s College recent graduate Sarah Connell (’19) and co-taught by current students Kait Johnston-Napora and Cassie Block with support of Dr. Shanen Sherrer (Assistant Professor of Biochemistry). Due to the success of this event and workshop, there are plans to continue this partnership between the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of St. Mary’s College and STEM-ING organizers are already in the works for next year. Well done St. Mary’s STEM faculty and students!
